Our History
Winery Tours | Wine Tasting | Our History
The vineyard, established in 1968, has now grown into a winery and restaurant. Among the 70 acres in production and locally grown grapes we have grown from producing 2000 gallons of wine to over 100,000 gallons. Tabor Hill Winery and Restaurant is proud of its growth and achievements in its award wining wines and acclaimed dining.
We have ideal conditions for making superb wine. The glacier that formed the Great Lakes pushed up the hilly terrain, which we are planted on. It provides our grapes with perfect airflow and keeps us from getting the late freezes in the spring and early freezes in the fall. Lake Michigan, approximately 5 miles from our vineyards keeps our wines insulated through lake effect rains during the summer and snow during the winter. The breezes of the lake keep us 5 to 10 degrees cooler in the summer and warmer during the winter. The sandy soil of the hills lets the roots of the vine breathe like that of finest grape growing regions of the world.
Our quality production through winemaker Mike Merchant has won us many awards and continues to place Tabor Hill wines among the best. The Classic Demi-Sec, our first wine, celebrated in the White House by many presidents continues to lead in wine sales from the state of Michigan. The winery, which began with two barns, now carries a complete line of the best wine making equipment in the state of Michigan. We are proud of serving our guests with unique pairings of wine and food. Our guests are always welcome to the Winery and Restaurant for tours and tasting. We also offer tasting along with our special merchandise at our retail stores. Visit us and let us give you a taste of Tabor Hill hospitality.
